A huge growth in solar panel installations has been seen across the UK in the first half of 2022. The encouraging news was revealed by Solar Media Market Research, recording an 80% growth in new solar PV installations compared to the same period last year.
Although there has been growth across all sectors, residential installations have been driving the surge, with large commercial rooftops and ground-mounted sites also contributing to the 556MW of capacity installed in the first six months of this year. New builds are responsible for much of the residential growth, an encouraging sign as the number of domestic PV installations declined in 2019. This was when the government Feed-in Tariffs (FiT) scheme, to promote the uptake of renewable energy installations, was removed.
Now demand is firmly on the rise, which is also being seen in the large commercial sector. This is believed to be down to businesses taking action to meet their net zero and sustainability targets. The commercial rooftop market in the UK has seen a meteoric rise of more than 135% during the first half of 2022.
Incidentally, the recent UK heatwave saw solar power meet up to a quarter of the UK’s energy demand on July 19. The desire to deploy solar on a large scale in the UK is extremely encouraging, including for SNRG as we introduce more solar-powered smartgrids across the country.
Alec Hussain, SNRG Chief Marketing Officer says: “The transition to an all-electric zero-carbon future, coupled with the current energy crisis, has created a flood of interest for solutions that are not just renewable, but smart.
“SmartGrids are not only able to reduce cost and carbon, they can also decrease project timelines, especially in capacity constrained locations.”
