THE SMARTGRID AT WEST WORKS

SmartGrid
Overview

The SNRG SmartGrid at West Works has been designed in collaboration with the developer, St Modwen Homes, who will build all the homes over 7 years. The design of the SmartGrid and its specifications may change over that period, and as such, the estimates are based on the current design.

Harnessing the communal power

A traditional Approach

In the UK, household electricity consumption often peaks at times that don’t coincide with sunlight hours – like turning on the kettle for your morning or evening cuppa. This misalignment means that the average UK home with 10 solar panels will use less than half of the solar power produced. The surplus? It’s exported back to the grid for far less than what it costs to buy electricity from the grid! We believe this is not only unfair but a waste of low-cost, low-carbon electricity.

Harnessing the communal power

The SNRG
SmartGrid approach

Rooftop solar PV is connected directly to the SNRG SmartGrid, which means your home can access the power from the 1,479 rooftop panels plus the large communal battery storage system on the West Works SNRG SmartGrid. The SNRG SmartGrid ensures that you will only ever pay for the electricity your home uses, while the communal-wide network minimises the wasteful export of low-cost, low-carbon solar power back to the grid while equally maximising the benefits and savings for all homes on the SNRG SmartGrid.

NextGen Power Supplied by SNRG

215 homes at West Works, Longbridge are connected to the SNRG SmartGrid. If you live in one of these homes, and once you have signed up for an account, SNRG will be your electricity supplier. SNRG will send you monthly bills—either by paper or digitally—that you can pay through various convenient methods. You’ll also have access to an online account, the SNRG app, and our Customer Support Team who are available via phone or email.

When the sun shines, much of your electricity may come from the communal rooftop solar PV array. During periods when onsite solar or battery energy isn’t sufficient to meet the energy demand for your home, electricity from offsite energy sources like wind, hydro or nuclear will supply the national grid, which will supply the SNRG SmartGrid and in turn your home.

Our SmartGrid tariffs give you access to cleaner, greener energy from renewable sources. They’re designed to be cost-effective too, aiming to give you a discount at least 15% cheaper than the Default Tariff Cap* over the course of a year. The final discount will depend on how much energy the SmartGrid residents use and when.

* Ofgem is the energy regulator that sets the maximum price suppliers can charge customers on standard variable tariffs. This cap is reviewed every three months to reflect changes in energy costs. Find more information at https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/energy-policy-and-regulation/policy-and-regulatory-programmes/energy-price-cap-default-tariff-policy/energy-price-cap-default-tariff-levels

Every month, SNRG gives you a discount on your energy bill. This comes from savings made when residents in your community use solar power from the SmartGrid solar panels and battery storage, instead of using electricity from the national grid.

The more solar energy that’s used by residents during the month, the bigger the communal savings. At the end of the month, SNRG works out each person’s share based on when and how much energy they used while the solar panels or battery were providing power versus from the national grid. This is done fairly and automatically — no need to apply or do anything manually.

SNRG also manages the battery system to make the most of solar energy, helping boost savings for everyone.

You can save even more by using energy at cheaper times, like overnight. SNRG can support you with tips and tools to help shift your energy use to those periods.

Your home uses electricity for heating, hot water, lights, and all appliances. That means your electricity bill might seem high at first glance, but remember, you’re not paying for gas like a typical dual-fuel household. Electricity is your only energy cost. Making use of your Hive smart thermostat will put you in control of your usage and ensure you’re not using electricity unnecessarily.

In this phase of the development, solar panels will be installed on the most suitable houses and apartments for solar generation. Whilst not every property will have solar panels, the panels installed form a single, shared energy pool that benefits all residents in the area, including those in the homes without panels. It’s a smart, sustainable way to share the power of the sun across the entire neighbourhood.

During the day, the rooftop solar panels across the development generate electricity and all the solar energy is pooled into a shared SmartGrid, like a communal energy pot. Any solar energy that isn’t used right away is stored in a communal battery. This battery acts like a big rechargeable power bank, it holds onto the extra energy so it can be used later – like in the evening.

The SmartGrid system monitors how much energy is being generated, stored, and used. It automatically decides when to use solar energy directly, when to draw from the battery and when to top up from the grid. This helps SNRG to supply your home with lower-cost and lower carbon electricity, without you needing to do anything.

The freeholder (the person that owns the home) owns the solar PV systems (which includes the inverters and the electrical cables), but SNRG will maintain them.

The homes have a covenant applied to the property Title, which means that you have a responsibility to not cause damage to the system. You cannot permanently disconnect or remove the solar PV system without SNRG’s consent. You are able to remove the panels temporarily to do things like maintain or repair the roof. Please let us know if you need to temporarily disconnect your panels.

If you are interested in having a charger installed please contact our customer services and we can confirm the process for providing a connection.

Yes, you can choose a different electricity supplier, but if you do, you will lose the discount you get from the SNRG SmartGrid. If you want to change supplier, please contact us and we’ll talk you through the process.

Yes you can, we estimate your annual consumption and divide the cost by 12 months. You might end up in credit over the summer when you use less electricity and owe a bit more in the winter when you use more for heating, but it should balance out over the year.

Yes, we can provide Pre-Payment pay as you go option if that’s what you’d prefer. Please contact us if this is an option you would like to consider.
